Which size do I need — 58 mm or 58.4 mm?
58 mm fits classic standard baskets in most 58 mm group heads (E61, La Marzocco, Synesso, Slayer, Gaggia). 58.4 mm is optimized for professional baskets with larger interior diameter — typically Pesado, IMS Competition, VST or upgrade baskets. If in doubt measure the basket interior or check the manufacturer's spec: if the 58 mm fits loosely, 58.4 mm is the right choice.
Does the weight (500 g) really make a difference?
Yes, significantly. At 500 g you only need a controlled downward push — the mass creates the tamping force. With a lighter tamper (200–300 g) you have to actively press, which strains your wrist and elbow after 30+ shots per shift. Result: less force, more consistency, less pain.
Is anodized aluminum dishwasher-safe?
Not recommended. Anodized surfaces are very scratch-resistant, but the hot alkaline detergent in dishwashers can attack the anodization over time. Best to wipe the tamper with a damp cloth, with a mild cleaner if needed — and dry with the Cafetto Barista Cloth Set.
How does it differ from the Self-Levelling Tamper?
The Pro Black Tamper is a classic hand tamper without a spring mechanism — you control pressure and angle entirely yourself. Advantage: maximum control, pro feel, no mechanism to wear out. Disadvantage: requires consistent tamping technique. If you want consistency without practice, the Self-Levelling Tamper is the better choice.
