The hexagonal-block geometry of the Hammerhead burr is designed for dense, hard beans. Result: a dense, juicy cup with defined fruit structure and stable sweetness. Perfect for espresso from single origins and dense washed beans.

Nitro Blade LAB — Refined Classic

Description

The Comandante C40 MK4 LAB Series is the experimentation platform from the Bavarian Burr Lab — the same proven MK4 mechanics as the standard C40, but with three specialty burr geometries, each producing a distinct cup profile.

Choose between three burr sets: Tigershark (clear, bright acidity), Hammerhead (dense, fruity structure, ideal for dense beans), or Nitro Blade LAB (refined version of the classic Nitro Blade burr). Every grinder is hand-calibrated in Germany.

Body and mechanics are identical to the standard C40 — the difference is the burr geometry. The LAB burrs are newer developments from the Bavarian Burr Lab, each with a defined cup profile.

The LAB Series is aimed at brewing enthusiasts who deliberately work with burr geometry and cup profile — cuppings, competition brewing, targeted profile development. Not for the standard beginner, but if you're growing your brewing craft, this opens up new flavor worlds.

Tipps für die erste Tasse

When you brew with a LAB burr for the first time, keep your recipe constant and taste only the burr difference — otherwise variables overlap.

Hammerhead often needs 1–2 clicks finer than your standard brew setting — the geometry produces fewer fines.

Tigershark benefits from higher brew temperatures (95–96 °C) — the clarity comes through better.

Which burr for which brewing method?

Tigershark: light filter roasts, naturals, anaerobic beans (pour-over, V60, AeroPress). Hammerhead: dense washed single origins, manual espresso (Flair, 9Barista), French press. Nitro Blade LAB: universal, slightly refined version of the classic profile.

What's the difference between the LAB Series and the standard C40?

Body and mechanics are identical — the difference is the burr geometry. The LAB burrs are newer developments from the Bavarian Burr Lab, each with a defined cup profile. You don't need the LAB if the standard Nitro Blade is enough — you choose it when you work deliberately with profiles.

Can I swap burrs between standard and LAB?

Yes — every C40 MK4 uses the same burr mount. You can retrofit a standard C40 with a LAB burr or vice versa. Replacement burrs are available directly from Comandante.

How long does the LAB burr last?

Same as the standard Nitro Blade: 10+ years under normal use. The LAB geometries use the same materials (high-nitrogen steel) — no reduced lifespan compared to the standard.
